Is it Safe to Have an X-Ray During Pregnancy?
You may have heard that having an X-Ray during pregnancy can harm your baby and feel concerned about the need to have a diagnostic x-ray while you’re pregnant. X-rays do expose you to small amounts of radiation so that a doctor can see inside the body. And there’s no doubt that exposure to radiation can harm an unborn child. But is that a good reason to avoid diagnostic treatment while you’re pregnant?

Talk to your doctor about whether x-ray exposure during pregnancy is necessary to diagnose your injury or illness.
X-rays are only used when they are necessary for diagnosis. The fact is that they are not an elective treatment with an alternative you can choose. The benefits of using an X-Ray generally outweigh the risks. A healthier mom leads to a healthier baby. And putting up with a fracture or other health problems which could be diagnosed through X-Ray is likely to do more harm than good. The basic rule of thumb is to always let medical professionals know you’re pregnant and to make informed decisions.
Not all x-rays are the same and some may cause more exposure than others. Read on for more information.
Arm, Leg, and Chest X-Ray During Pregnancy:
These x-rays tend to be very localized and it is unlikely that rays will reach your reproductive system or your baby. It is far better to know about and treat an injury than to leave it untreated for fear of radiation.
Abdomen, Lower Back, and Pelvic X-Ray During Pregnancy:
This type of x-ray could be riskier because the rays are applied directly to your womb and the area around your womb. Make sure you have discussed your condition with your doctor and that together you make an informed decision about the best course of action.
Is Dental X-Ray Safe During Pregnancy?
Dental x-rays only affect the teeth and gums and are proven to be completely safe during pregnancy. In fact, it’s strongly advised that you visit your dentist at least once during your pregnancy, as hormonal changes can cause enamel to weaken and tooth decay to advance.
What about the Airport X-Ray and Pregnancy?
Airports simply wouldn’t be able to use their x-ray machines if there was a risk they could cause harm to anyone, including pregnant mothers and unborn children. Rest assured that it’s completely safe to go through airport security while you’re pregnant.
