Leaking Breasts During Pregnancy – Answers and Advice
Leaking breasts in pregnancy trimester three is a common symptom which shows your body is preparing to breastfeed. Read on for four of the most commonly asked questions about leaking breasts during pregnancy.
1. When do Your Breasts Start Leaking During Pregnancy?
Generally, this symptom doesn’t kick in until near the end of your pregnancy. Breasts leaking clear fluid during pregnancy trimester three is a very common symptom and is a sign that your breasts are preparing to make milk. This fluid is called colostrum and is the first creamy milk you will feed Baby with after he or she arrives. Some women will produce a lot of it during pregnancy, while others won’t leak at all. This has no bearing on whether or not you’ll be able to produce milk and breastfeed successfully after delivery. So don’t worry too much if you don’t experience this symptom.
2. What Causes Leaking Breasts During Pregnancy 3rd Trimester?
When you’re pregnant, your body is really busy. It not only grows a tiny human, it also prepares itself to nurture that tiny human. Your pregnancy hormones start making colostrum to prepare for feeding your baby.
3. Is it Normal to have Leaking Breasts During Pregnancy Trimesters One and Two?
Yes. It’s less common than in the third trimester but your breasts may start leaking colostrum any time from about sixteen weeks on.
4. What can I do to Make the Symptom More Comfortable?
If you find you have leaky breasts there’s really nothing you can do to stop it from happening, but you can make it more comfortable for yourself. Consider buying some absorbent breast pads. This will mean you can change them regularly to prevent the leaks showing or the milk developing an odor as it dries in your bra. Also, avoid bras made of lacy or scratchy material and invest in a quality nursing bra – the dampness can cause chafing between the breasts or on the nipples and this can be painful and uncomfortable. You may also find it more comfortable to wear a bra. Check out our review of a maternity sleep bra here.
