Early Maternity Clothes – Stylish Outfits that Last the Distance
At around twelve weeks pregnant you’ll probably notice your waistline expanding and you may need to think about early maternity clothes. But, you’re going to get a whole lot bigger over the next six months. Why spend hundreds of dollars on items you’ll only wear for a short time?
If you’re smart about the clothes you buy earlier in your pregnancy, you can build a stylish maternity wardrobe that you can just add bits and pieces to as your pregnancy progresses.
Check out these ten tips for smart early maternity clothes:
If you don’t want to spend a fortune on maternity clothes, buying versatile items that you can mix and match is the key. Invest in a few tops in colors which suit you and match them with skirts, pants, and accessories. A few patterned silk scarves can do wonders for making the same outfit brand new!
2. Fabrics that Stretch are Best:
Your body will be changing day to day. Both your breasts and belly can be noticeably larger from one week to the next. So, it’s important that your early maternity clothes have a little give.
3. Make Use of the Clothes You Have:
If you’re a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl, you’ll want to make your fave pair last as long as possible. Consider investing in a belly band, which allows you to leave the top button of your jeans unbuttoned while still giving you a flattering and secure fit.
4. Jeggings are Your Friend:
There will, however, come a time when you have to tuck your jeans away for after Baby arrives. When this happens, jeggings are comfortable and stretchy but they still give you the look of fitted jeans.
5. Layers look Fabulous:
If you’re finding it a little difficult to adjust to your changing shape, layers are a fantastic solution. Wear a tank top with built in breast and belly support and throw a floaty tunic over top. You can buy stylish tunics that are fitted in the bodice and arms and flow gracefully over your belly, accentuating your best features. The other benefit of layering is that you can respond to changes in temperature. You’re likely to feel the heat (and the cold!) more while you’re pregnant and it’s good to be able to play the “Cardigan on – Cardigan off – Cardigan on” game when the weather won’t make up its mind.
6. Don’t be Afraid to Flaunt the Bump!
Modern maternity clothes have changed. There’s no need to wear a tent like your mom probably did! Dresses are cleverly tailored to incorporate your bump and flatter your figure. You can even buy beautiful maternity evening gowns if you have a special event coming up.
7. You have to be Comfortable:
Whether you’re shopping for yoga pants or work clothes, your comfort during pregnancy is paramount. Avoid itchy or stiff fabrics, internal zips or buttons, and anything with a low waistband. If you love the belted style, look for baby doll cuts which are belted below the bodice and flow over the belly.
8. Look for Items that Will Grow with You:
Many modern maternity clothes have clever design features which help them to grow as you do. Look for items that have built in ruching or pleats to allow room for your growing breasts and belly.
9. Have Some Fun!
Some of the latest pregnancy fashions include printed T-shirts with funny messages like “Bun in the Oven“. My personal favorite is this Star Wars themed maternity shirt – The Force is Strong with this one! You can even get funky message shirts for dads-to-be. Why not have a little fun with your pregnancy.
10. Make Sure You Have a Pair of Comfortable Shoes:
Lower back pain and swollen feet are unfortunate symptoms of pregnancy. The shoes you wear can make a huge difference to your comfort levels. Even if you just wear them walking to work and then slip on your good ones when you get there. I live in my Sketchers Go Walks. They are super soft, have room to grow when the feet are having a “puffy day” and the memory foam is heaven to walk on. Oh, and if your feet get a bit sweaty and smelly you can just throw them in the washing machine!
