What to Expect When You’re 16 Weeks Pregnant
At 16 weeks pregnant your baby continues to grow rapidly. He or she is now about the size of an avocado – about four and a half inches long and weighing around three and a half ounces.
Most of the internal organs are working really well now, and the little heart is pumping approximately 25 quarts of blood each and every day!
This is a really exciting stage of pregnancy for women and men alike because (if you choose to) you can find out the gender of your baby! Don’t be too disappointed if you can’t see – sometimes Baby faces away or curls up into a little ball and protects his privacy! Just book another ultrasound for a couple of weeks later and sit tight!
Common Symptoms when You’re 16 Weeks Pregnant
Pregnancy symptoms at 16 weeks are a mix of good and not so good. Most of those uncomfortable early preg symptoms, like spotting, nausea and fatigue will have stopped. And you’ll be well into the swing of things.
You may experience a stuffy nose (Rhinitis of Pregnancy) and bleeding gums. Both of these symptoms are caused by the pregnancy hormones and increased blood flow and are perfectly normal.
On the plus side, those same hormones will cause your skin to have a beautiful glow and your hair and nails to grow like never before!
Pregnancy To-Do List
Make that all-important decision about whether you and your partner are going to find out the sex of your baby! It’s also a great time to start thinking about names: a family name? Something from a favorite book? It can be really hard to agree, so keep a list, an open mind, and a friendly attitude.
Keep up with those pregnancy exercises. Regular stretching, walking and strengthening will help prevent back pain. And it’ll also help you to snap back into shape after your baby arrives!
The physical signs of pregnancy will now well and truly be showing. Your uterus is now about halfway between the pubic bone and the navel. So now’s a great time to invest in some maternity clothes to suit the season (see our pregnancy style guides below).
